China Built the Largest Elevator in the World and It’s Mesmerizing to Watch

China has accomplished another impressive engineering feat by building a gigantic elevator that can carry cargo ships over dams, specifically the Three Gorges Dam on China’s Yangtze River.
The giant lift cuts the travel time for the ships to go over the dam from three hours to just 40 minutes according to Quartz. The elevator has the capacity to carry about 7 million pounds per ride over a vertical distance of 113 meters. The size of the ship lift’s basin is 120×18×3.5 meters. 
While the bigger ships will still pass through the old route, using several stages of locks, the elevator will be useful for the rest of the ships which carry around six million tons of cargo across the dam annually.
One of the challenges of the lift, however, is the unpredictability of the water level. The ship lift can still function well even if water levels vary by 39 ft on the lower side, and 30 meters on the upper side.
