Shannon Lee, CEO of the Bruce Lee Foundation, has filed a lawsuit against a Chinese fast-food chain for allegedly using an image of her father without permission.
Lee, 50, has reportedly asked the restaurant chain to cease using Bruce Lee’s image, clarify to media outlets that it has no connection to her father for 90 days, and fork over 210 million yuan ($30 million) in damages, according to Sixth Tone.
The logo has an uncanny resemblance to Bruce Lee, in his fighting pose and iconic yellow tracksuit, which he donned in “Game of Death”.
The fast-food chain said in a statement on Thursday that it was confused about the lawsuit since the logo has been used for 15 years after it was approved by China’s national trademark office.
“There were disputes many years ago over whether our trademark constitutes infringement, but our trademark has never been determined to be an infringement,” the restaurant said. “We are also very puzzled about being sued after so many years and are actively analyzing the case to respond to the lawsuit.”
Shannon Lee plans to build a rights-protection office in China to protect her father’s legacy in China after she accused the restaurant chain of copyright infringement in 2010.
The Bruce Lee Foundation is “dedicated to sharing the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee to inspire personal growth, positive energy, and global harmony,” according to its website.
Over the summer, Shannon spoke out against Bruce Lee’s portrayal in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”.
“He [Lee] comes across as an arrogant a****** who was full of hot air,” she said. “And not someone who had to fight triple as hard as any of those people did to accomplish what was naturally given to so many others. Here, he’s the one with all the puffery and he’s the one challenging Brad Pitt. Which is not how he was.”
